Pudsey made his first appearance in 1985. He was created by designer Joanna Ball and was designed to be the face of the forthcoming BBC Children in Need Appeal. Pudsey's name was taken from the Yorkshire town of Pudsey, Joanna's original home.

Although Pudsey was only intended to host the BBC Children in Need Appeal for one year, the public loved him and he went on to become the face of BBC Children in Need.

Pudsey started life as a rather different looking bear, but over the years he has evolved into the recognisable yellow figure we know and love. Pudsey has fashionably moved with the times in many ways. Over the years his image has graced items ranging from classic china mugs to state-of-the-art mobile phone covers. Pudsey even has his own email address.

Pudsey's famous line of merchandise has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for the charity over the years.

Pudsey has helped out at countless BBC Children in Need fundraising events. He has also spent time mixing with the rich and famous, and has rubbed shoulders with a variety of well-known figures, ranging from pop stars to prime ministers. (Pudsey was once guest of honour at a House of Commons Christmas party.) And he is loved most by children: throughout the year Pudsey receives letters and emails from young people all over the UK.

For almost 20 years this bandaged, yellow bear has BBC Children in Need and its work become familiar all over the world. He has also become one of the most recognised and well-loved characters to be associated with a charity.




BBC 방송에서 어린이를 돕기위한 기금 마련 행사를 한다.
거의 일년 내내 한다고 보면 된다.  그 마스코트가 저 인형이다.

오늘 세라를 데릴러 학교에 가서 아이가 나오기를 기다리는데, 어떤 학생 엄마가
가방에서 비닐봉지를 꺼내더니 이웃에 사는 여인이 이렇게 손수 만들어서
기금 마련을 하고 있어서 자기가 좀 도와주고 싶어서 오늘 가지고 나왔다고..
한개에 1파운드 인데, 수익금은 전액 BBC Children in Need에 기부 된다고...

영국은 복지국가이다.
어린이들에게 무료 교육과 의료 그리고 그들이 기본적으로 필요한 돈을 Child Benefit
이라는 이름으로 매달 지불한다.
그러니까 태어나는 순간부터 나라가 아이들의 최소한의 삶은 보장을 한다는 이야기이다
그래서인지 출산율도 높다.
요즘은 보통 2 -3명의 아이들은 낳는것 같다.

 BBC는 국영방송이고 그 국영 방송에서 아이들을 위한 모금 운송의 의미는 크다.
좀더 나은 삶을, 좀더 많은 기회를 아이들에 주기 위해서는 돈이 필요하고
그 돈을 각자의 주머니에서 조금씩 추렴하기 위한 행사가 많다.
이 모금액들은 영국의 불우한 아이들 뿐만 아니라,
전쟁중 이거나, 어려운 상황에 빠진 나라들, 특히 아프리카, 제3 세계의 아이들을
위해서도 많이 쓰인다고 한다.

집에 있는 털실로 마스코트를 만들었을 그 아줌마의 손길이 고마워서
나도 하나 샀다.
내 작은 동전 한잎이 힘든 상황의 아이들에게 조금이 나마 도움이 되기를 기원 하면서...

어느 상황에서도
아이들은 보호 받아야 하고
아이들이 가장 먼저 우선 되어야 한다고..
오늘 읽은 인터넷판 뉴스의 끔찍함을 생각하니 가슴이 무겁다...
