As a child

Growing up in Ipswich, England, Helen Oxenbury loved nothing more than drawing. As a teenager, she entered art school and basked in the pleasure of drawing, and nothing but drawing, all day. During vacations she helped out at the Ipswich Repertory Theatre workshop, mixing paints for set designers. It was there that she decided her future lay in theatre design. While studying costume design, however, Helen was told by a teacher, "This is hopeless, you know. You ought to go and do illustrations - you're much more interested in the character, and we don't know who's going to play the part!"

As an adult

Sets and scenery, not books, remained Helen's preoccupation for her early adult life as she embarked on careers in theatre, film, and TV. After marrying John Burningham, another of the world's most eminent children's book illustrators, and giving birth to their first child, at last she turned to illustrating children's books. "When I had babies," Helen says, "I wanted to be home with them and look for something to do there." Helen and her husband make their home in London, where the she works in a nearby studio. She is also an avid tennis player.

As an artist

Today, Helen is among the most popular and critically acclaimed illustrators of her time. Her numerous books for children include the Kate Greenaway Medal-winning Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll; Smarties Book Prize-winning Farmer Duck by Martin Waddell; We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen; as well as her classic board books for babies. And what does she love most about her work? Thinking up new ideas? Seeing the finished book? Not at all. For Helen, "The best part is when I think I know what I'm doing and I've completed a few drawings. In fact, when I get about a third of the way through, and I feel I'm on my way, then I'm happy. It's like reading a good book - you don't want it to end

헬린 옥슨버리는 영국 이프스위치 출신의 일러스트레이터이다. 런던 센트럴 아트 스쿨에서 무대 디자인을 공부했고, 연극, 영화, 텔레비전 분야에서 일하다가 영국 3대 그림책 작가로 손꼽히는 존 버닝햄과 혼인한 뒤로는 남편의 영향을 받아 어린이 그림책 쪽으로 방향을 돌렸다. 1970년에 에드워드 리어의 <퀭글,왱글의 모자>와 M.맨프리의 <어염집에 사는 용>의 일러스트레이션으로 케이트 그린어웨이 상을 받았다. 그녀는 주로 색연필을 소재로 한 섬세하고 따뜻한 그림을 많이 보여준다. <맨 처음에 보는 책>이라는 유아용 그림책은 이 분야에서 고전으로 자리를 굳혔다. 그녀는 특히 이야기 세계에 흥미를 갖게 하기보다는 어린이들이 책과 친해질 수 있는 계기를 만들어주는 그림책을 구성하는 데에 주력하고 있다

이글을 쓰면서 자료를 찾아 보았더니, 남편이 존 버닝햄..

그녀의 동화책은 어린 아이들과 같이 보기 특히 좋은것

같다...
